We have chosen to address this subject given the significant and increasing challenges faced by employers in dealing with giving feedback to team members and managing performance generally. In particular, organisations continue to struggle with executing on performance management without facing into almost immediate “employee response” in the form of absence from work, the initiation of stress claims and in some instances claims of bullying.
Some of the matters to be addressed will include:
- why employers and managers need to understand the “psyche” of feedback (both giving and receiving);
- how HR/P&C professionals can provide meaningful guidance to line managers at all levels to make them better at managing performance;
- what we can learn from guidance provided by the Fair Work Commission in recent years on this subject;
- how to respond to bullying claims arising from a performance management process; and
- whether employers are “stuck” with absence and stress claims which are allegedly triggered.
